Plug a $35 Google Chromecast into your TV, and you can easily stream content from YouTube, Netflix, or Google Play Movies to your television set. Just fire up the video you want to watch on your Android or iOS device or in the Chrome web browser on your PC, and tap the button to send it to your TV.

It’s pretty cool when it works, but there are plenty of online video sites that aren’t supported… yet. It looks like at least a few more options are on the way.

Yesterday we saw the first Gameboy emulator ported to the Chromecast. Here’s some of the latest Google Chromecast news.

Redbox, Vimeo, HBO Go, and more

Your favorite video source isn’t officially supported yet? You can try firing up the webpage in the Chrome browser on your PC and streaming the whole browser tab to your TV — but not all sites work when you do that, and video playback is limited to 720p content.

The good news is that a few major video sites seem to have their sights set on Chromecast.

GigaOm reports Vimeo and Redbox Instant are both working to support Chromecast.

There are also indications in the Chromecast source code that HBO Go support is on the way. And the makers of the Plex media center software are also looking at adding Chromecast support.

RemoteCast (Beta): Chromecast remote app for Android

When you use your mobile device to send a video to your Chromecast, playback controls can vary from app to app. Netflix doesn’t work the same way as YouTube, which doesn’t work the same way as Google Play, and so on.

The good news is that if you’re used to using those apps on your Android device, then you already know how to control the video playing on your TV. But if you’d rather just have a single universal remote, there’s now an app for that.

RemoteCast is an unofficial remote app which lets you control play/pause, track seeking, volume, and more.

The app is still in beta, is known to crash occasionally, and hardware volume keys aren’t yet supported. But what do you expect? Google launched Chromecast less than a week ago!

You can download RemoteCast for free from the Google Play Store.

Koush’s Phone to Chromecast app

Android developer Koushik Dutta is probably best known as the guy behind ClockworkMod Recovery, Helium, ROM Manager, Tether, and… you know what? He’s just done some pretty cool stuff, OK?

His latest accomplishment is an app that lets you stream anything from your Android gallery to your Chromecast using Android’s share button.

It supports images and videos, which run at full frame-rates. He’s also looking into sharing music and playlists.

Unfortunately he’s not making the app available for download — at least not yet, as it would apparently violate the terms of Google’s beta software developer kit.

Hopefully that restriction will be lifted in the future.
