Linux boutique System76 pulled the wraps off several new laptops yesterday, including the Galago UltraPro. It’s a sleek new notebook that runs an Intel Core i7 Haswell chip — which means it should offer plenty of power and exceptional battery life. According to System76, the Galago UltraPro is also the first laptop under one inch thick to ship with Intel’s Iris Pro graphics.

What else is packed into the Galago UltraPro’s three-quarter-inch frame? It can be configured with up to 16B of RAM, both mSATA and SATA SSD (and/or SATA HDD), 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and a 53 watt-hour battery. As for ports, the UltraPro offers HDMI and Display Port outputs, Gigabit Ethernet, and three USB 3.0 ports. There’s also an SD card reader and a 1MP webcam. The base configuration weighs just a touch under four pounds.

With 4GB of memory and a 500GB SATA hard drive, the Galago UltraPro starts at $995. System76 is now taking pre-orders and the laptop will begin shipping next month.

In the past, a laptop like this would have been viewed as a productivity machine. Linux wasn’t exactly blessed with an abundance of top-notch gaming titles and Intel graphics have never been all that impressive. Now, however, things are different. Linux users can install Steam and download a swath of popular first-tier games like Team Fortress 2 and Serious Sam 3 — and Haswell’s integrated graphics offer substantially better performance.

  1. This would be PERFECT for me if it was Windows. Is there anyway to get windows OS on System76 or not possible? Man I got so excited when I found this but then I realized its Linux. I am a college student, really need Windows 7/8.

  2. Not really a fan of the overall look and the use of a clickpad. Do they make/plan to make Haswell ultraportables with 11.6″ screens? Maybe even a 10.1″ one with a Y series chip?

    1. Yes, at least down to 10.6″… which is the size of the Surface Pro screen… and the updated MacBook Air is 11.6″ with Haswell already…

    1. sometimes things pop there first.

so unless you knew the news beforehand and didn’t read it from there, then you place it as a source.

  3. Is like to see how the gaming performance is with that internal video

    1. It should fit somewhere between a 630 and a 640m-le maybe even better since you don’t need to use primus/optirun
