$249 Samsung Chromebook gets support for Netflix streaming video

The Samsung Chromebook is a $249 laptop with an ARM-based processor that can do almost anything a Chrome OS laptop with an Intel processor can do. But up until recently there was one glaring difference: You couldn’t stream videos from Netflix on the Samsung Series Chromebook.

Now you can.

Normally you need a computer which supports Microsoft Silverlight to stream Netflix on a PC. Or you can use a mobile app to stream Netflix videos to a mobile device running Android, iOS, or Windows Mobile.

The ARM-powered Samsung Chromebook doesn’t fall into either of those categories, so it required a different solution.

Google Community Manager Melissa Daniels says that the company has worked with Microsoft and Netflix to enable support for streaming Netflix content to the Samsung Chromebook using HTML5.

All you need is a Netflix account (which runs $7.99 per month in the US) to get started.

I wonder what Netflix’s excuse will be now for not allowing Linux users to use Netflix natively?

really good question! i assumed it was because they didn’t want to be on the hook for customer support but if they already have HTML5 users in the wild, it seems like linux is just around the corner.

With this issue tackled, is there any other limitation holding back the ARM Chromebooks vs something like the Acer C7?
