The HP Slate 7 is an unremarkable, but inexpensive 7 inch Android tablet. It’s expected to go on sale int he US in April for $169.

This week the tablet made an appearance at the FCC website on its way to store shelves.

HP Slate 7

HP’s tablet features a 7 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, a 1.6 GHz  Rockchip RK3066 ARM Cortex-A9 dual core processor, 8GB of storage, and 1GB of RAM. It has a microSD card slot, front and rear cameras, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean software. The FCC photos also show a 12.95Whr, 3500mAH battery.

This is hardly the first tablet from HP. The company currently offers several Windows 8 tablets, and a few years ago HP spent over a billion dollars to purchase Palm. That acquisition led to the short-lived HP TouchPad 9.7 inch tablet with webOS software. It  was discontinued just months after it was launched, due to sluggish sales.

While HP’s new Slate 7 tablet doesn’t exactly have bleeding edge hardware or software, it does have a decent price. That plus the HP brand might be enough to help it compete with other low cost tablets such as the Google Nexus 7, Amazon Kindle Fire HD, and dozens of cheap Chinese tablets (which have surprisingly similar hardware to the Slate 7).

  1. $10 more gets you a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 these days. Bigger battery and a proven performer.

  2. I was hoping they’d come out with a Windows 8 UMPC running Clover Trail. Maybe Bay Trail. I can hope.

    1. I would definitely buy a 7″ Clover Trail Windows 8 tablets. I used a friend’s 10″ one and it was great if you use it like an Android or iOS tablet with the occasional desktop software For me, I’d use the desktop browsers and Amazon S3 clients. I may use some Intel Quick Sync video encoding software too.

  3. Yeah, going from the Touchpad to this. No differentiating factors here – everything is safe and forgettable (as are their windows tablets and, oh, PCs). I’m sure they’ll sell 10s of them!! One can only wonder what might have been if HP had never hired Leo Apothecker as CEO.

  4. An RK3066 ?!? like last years tech?? Not even a RK3188 or an A31.
They could just have easily reintroduced the Touchpad which runs Android 4.1 beautifully
Meg Whitman is driving HP into the ground.
