FreedomPop is reportedly planning to launch a new tablet accessory that will turn a WiFi-only iPad or Android tablet into a 4G LTE device. Forbes reports it’s called the FreedomPop LTE Clip, and as the name suggests, you clip it to the side of a tablet when in use.
This isn’t FreedomPop’s first device. The company already offers an iPod touch sleeve that lets you connect to a 4G WiMAX network. But the LTE Clip would be the company’s first tablet accessory and the first FreedomPop device to work with Android.
As with the company’s existing products, the FreedomPop LTE Clip will offer a freemium subscription model. Once you pay for the Clip, you get up to 500MB of free 4G service per month. If you need more than that, you can sign up for a subscription.
You can also share your internet connection over WiFi with up to 8 additional devices.
FreedomPop operates on Sprint’s wireless network, so you may want to check to see what Sprint’s 4G coverage is like in your market before plunking down cash to turn your Nexus 7 or Galaxy Tab into a 4G tablet.
The Clip is expected to weigh just a few ounces and offer up to 6 hours of battery life. It could hit the streets during the second half of 2013. There’s no word on how much it will cost.
