Tired of Android TV boxes that look like USB flash drives? The Tronsmart Prometheus looks more like a USB hub… or maybe a spaceship… or  visor

Whatever it looks like, the Prometheus is designed to turn your TV into an Android-powered media center. It’s available from several retailers for about $99.

Tronsmart Prometheus

Under the hood the Tronsmart Prometheus is powered by a 1.5 GHz dual core Amlogic AML8726-M6 ARM Cortex-A9 processor with Mali-400 graphics, 1GB Of RAM, and 4GB of storage.

That’s the same chip used in the G-Box Dyno and Diamond Multimedia AMP1000 media players. In other words, it’s not the fastest chip around, but it’s reasonably zippy and works with most Android apps and games, including YouTube and Netflix. You should also be able to run XBMC media center for Android on the Prometheus box.

Unlike many of the smaller Android TV sticks we’ve seen, the Prometheus has plenty of room for ports and features 3 USB 2.0 ports as well as HDMI and Ethernet jacks. It also has built-in support for 802.11b/g/n WiFi.

The device runs Google Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

  1. Anyone know if the AML8726-M6 has enough oomph to allow hardware acceleration on MXPlayer? I’m one of the people who has to deal with hi10p/10-bit profile MKV and likes having a nice low-profile media streamer. I’d kill for a device that cost this price and could actually play back 1080p 10-bit.

  2. I ordered one of these. I can’t wait for it to come!
I’ve been looking for something that could run xbmc with hardware decoding that wasn’t a single core.

  3. This looks cool… literally! Nice to see some design innovation once in a while.

  4. does it have a camera (wideview) for skype or Jitsi (encryted) video calls or meetings?

  5. Android sticks were a good innovation, but for a TV media player usage, there’s more to do : why not a “bar” on the upper side of a TV (compatible with flat TV), with an integrated webcam+micro to allow skype & other medias communication ?

This is the final target for a consumer to have a slim integration with TV, easy usage with remote (grand’fa must be able to use it), remote video access & comm with skype.

This product seems in good way, but the design seems a little heavy to fit on the top of a tv, especially flat lcd tv ! (crt are gone).

With a long flat bar, you can make a good facade design, and plenty of connections on the backside, for the geeks in us. Perhaps next gen ?

      1. Yes ! Something like this, with good hardware, and more larger to add needed conns on backside (eth & hdmi, off course ; but also many usb on the back, not on the front like this one)… and with a little more design.

    1. It is coming soon from – One Eye Monster brand – with rk 3066 chipset. We are going to promote it soon to phillipine.

  6. Looks like some sort of Batmobile. I definitely like all those connectors.

    1. And it appears to have 5 usb ports:

      “3 x USB 2.0 HS(outside); 2 x USB 2.0HS(inside)”

  7. I wonder what the stardrive section looks like?

In all seriousness, it’s an interesting idea and I like the included ports.
It looks like it’s supposed to fit onto the front of a TV’s stand or something maybe?
I’d like something like this with a little more horsepower.
