Samsung is offering a new version of the Series 3 Chromebox, a small desktop computer designed to run Google’s Chrome OS operating system.

The new model is called the XE300M22-B01US, and in terms of hardware it’s pretty much identical to the XE300Mww_A01US that launched in mid-2012. But Samsung has given the new model a shiny new plastic case.

Overall the new model looks more like an appliance and less like a computer thanks to its simple design and rounded corners. It actually has exactly the same audio, video, Ethernet, and USB ports as its predecessor, but the front-facing ports are now covered by a plastic door.

Under the hood both models have 1.9 GHz Intel Celeron B840 processors, Intel HD graphics, 4GB of RAM, and 16GB solid state disks. The computer has 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, a 2W mono speaker, 6 USB 2.0 ports, a DVI port, headset jack, and 2 Display Ports.

There’s no VGA port, but you can buy an adapter that lets you connect one.

The new model isn’t available for purchase in the US yet, but it went on sale in the UK recently. In the meantime, if you’re really interested in a desktop computer that weighs less than 3 pounds and runs Chrome OS, you can pick up the older model from Staples for just $300.

  1. 6 USB ports, looks more like 4 USB ports and 2 (e?)SATA ports if I take a good look at the picture

    1. The two wider ports on the bottom right are Display Port. The other two USB ports are on the front under that small flap.

  2. They are trying too hard to look futuristic or something. Also… it only has DVI? If they want to save space, they should use HDMI or Mini-DisplayPort.

  3. Very odd case. I preferred the other one, not sure if it’s going to help sell more Chrome devices unfortunately, they need to get in the stores!
