Retina displays. They’re not just for Apple tablets and tablets from from white box Chinese device makers anymore. They’re also for companies that slap their name on tablets produced by those white box Chinese device makers.

Archos plans to show off a new range of tablets at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas next week, including models with 2048 x 1536 pixel IPS displays.

Archos 97 Titanium HD

Archos says the new tablets will be part of its Elements line of mid-range tablets, with a new Titanium tablet with a dual-core processor and a Platinum tablet with a quad-core CPU.

There’s no word on the pricing or release date yet… and we actually already knew that Archos was getting into the high-res tablet space. The Archos 97 Titanium HD showed up on the company website a few weeks ago.

But the new Platinum series with a quad-core processor sounds like something brand new.

  1. Oh man. Now they’re adding PLATINUM? So they have Carbon, XS, Titanium, AND Platinum now? Why can’t this company get its act together and focus on doing a single *great* tablet instead of a bunch of crappy ones? Is their goal to push Coby, Aluratek, and others out of stores by stuffing the channel?

Anyway, I hope you’ll fondle their 8″ Carbon and XS tablets. Those interest me although I doubt I’d buy them.

  2. Archos 80 G9 in US does not have all codecs you need, where Archos does not play the file, and warns you that they can’t, however they have a button to take you to “their” store, where you can pay to download/install codecs (why they don’t have this all built-in when you buy, is strange)? Anyway, so to get around paying Archos, we need to convert video content to WebM format to use in the devices (Google is key behind this WebM effort, so runs on Android just fine). Pain in the neck, but in retrospect, everyone should be releasing video in JUST THIS FREE FORMAT – there are tools to do the conversion, but it does take a while. So, to do it, get an old PC, set that PC up with an install of Lubuntu (lightweight LXDE GUI), K3B (for burning CDs, or DVDs), and WinFF from the repository (in WinFF, then click on Google for the format you want to convert to – widescreen option is good, but it is your choice). Go at your video collection, convert what you want to the WebM format, then use AirDroid (for Android, from the Market) to move the files onto the devices OR move some other way.

  3. The down side of that retina-like display being the Archos-like tablet lurking just beneath.
    No thank you.
