The Kupa Ultranote X15 is a Windows 8 tablet with a laundry-list of top tier specs. It has a 10.1 inch, 1920 x 1200 pixel IPS display. It has 8GB of RAM. It has an Intel COre i5 or faster processor. And in addition to a 10-point capacitive multitouch display, the X15 has an active digitizer which lets you use a pressure-sensitive pen for writing or drawing.

Introduced last year, the Kupa Ultranote X15 is now available for purchase from Dynamism… but those features don’t come cheap. The tablet runs $1099 and up.

Other nifty features include a removable battery, an optional keyboard dock that lets you use the tablet like a notebook, and a side panel that can theoretically accept other docking components for optional card readers or other accessories (if and when Kupa releases those accessories).

The base model features an Intel Core i5-3317U Ivy Bridge processor and 64GB solid state disk. You can pay extra for more storage, a faster processor, or integrated 3G, with prices topping out at $1599 for a model with a Core i7-3517U chip, 128GB of storage, and a 3G modem.

All models feature front and rear cameras, 2 USB 3.0 ports, mini HDMI ports, WiFi, and Bluetooth. The tablet measures about half an inch thick and weighs about 1.7 pounds.

Dynamism is taking orders for the X15 now, but doesn’t expect the tablet to ship until early March.

Note that some of the premium features could be a mixed blessing — as I noted in my Acer Aspire S7 ultrabook review, high resolution displays work great on Windows 8 computers when you’re running full-screen, Metro-style apps.

But text and graphics can look awkward in some desktop apps — and that’s just what I observed while using a notebook with a 1920 x 1080 pixel 13.3 inch display. The Ultranote X15 has a smaller screen with even more pixels.

  1. That looks suspiciously like removable ram strip on the technical drawing of the thing, I sure hope it is. the drawing is on tis page: https://www.kupaworld.com/Products.html might be just a fancy mockup drawing though.
    Can’t
wait to see a review of the dock, this might be a great product for the
digital artist, since the transformer book seems to lack a digitizer at
the moment, I still hope the rumored 14″ version of the TF book might
have a pen and dedicated geforce gpu (mercury playback anyone?).

  2. Looks great but I can’t imagine walking around with the device which name (KUPA) translates in my native language to… SHIT. Quite unfortunate…

  3. “but those features don’t come cheap”.

Really? How about the prices of well-know manufacturers scrap with 720p resolution or another deal-breaker? With prices floating above the stratosphere…

  4. Wait what! This thing has crazy specs! Someone needs to do a hands on review of it. Big questions to answer fan noise, heat, battery life, dock, pen. I would love to know! It’s even lighter than the Surface Pro something got to give here.

  5. Spec wise, it looks like a great product especially the small 10.1″ 16×10 screen. I wonder if they’re going to update this with Haswell when those chips come out or does Kupa only update their products on a yearly or so basis?

With Haswell, the 7 hour battery life claim would probably be accurate. Plus, it would add connected standby. I was planning on getting a Dell Latitude 10 with 3G due to having long battery life and connected standby but the X15 would be better for some of my drawing software.

I guess I’ll wait to see some user reviews of the X15 in terms of battery life, build quality and heat (I assume cases would overheat the device pretty quickly.

    1. I was waiting for the drivers for Clover Trail tablets to stabilize before getting the Dell Latitude 10. By then the X15 will probably be shipping. We’ll see how reviews go with the X15. With the active digitizer, pen and 3G, they come out similarly priced. The X15 will definitely be better for graphics work.

  6. I’m interested in this if they offered a lower resolution screen since I do plan on running both desktop and Metro/Modern apps. From my experience, high PPI screens on Windows 7 desktop is a very bad experience. Turning up DPI doesn’t make it that much better and sometimes makes it worse. I’m assuming Windows 8 desktop environment hasn’t improved support for high PPI screens.

    1. It would be nice if it could switch to 1280×800 in desktop mode and then back again to native resolution in tablet mode.
