Dropbox, Google Drive, SugarSync, Box, and dozens of other cloud storage services let you upload your files to the internet and access them from any of your computers, phones, tablets, or other devices. But while most of these services give you a few gigabytes of space for free, you’ll probably have to pay if you want to sync your entire photo, video, or music collections.

Younity is a new service that lets you share all your files across all of your devices without paying a penny. The trick is that your files aren’t actually uploaded — instead they’re streamed from device to device — turning your phone, tablet and PC into a sort of personal cloud server.

Younity

In other words, if you’ve got hundred of MP3 albums, dozens of videos, and thousands of photos scattered across your devices, you don’t have to worry about which device to grab. Just pick up your phone and all of your files will be accessible — even if they’re actually sitting on your desktop computer.

The catch is that in order to access all your files, all your devices will need to be turned on and connected to the internet. While that might not be a big deal for your phone or tablet, it might mean leaving your PC turned on and sucking energy 24/7.

That’s because none of your files are stored on Younity’s servers… which is also why the company can offer its product for free. Eventually Younity may add a premium layer,

At launch Younity supports Windows, OS X, and iOS devices. Linux and Android apps are in the works.

  1. Why would you want to stream everything ? There are better solutions like ParaBlu(www.parablu.com) or cloudmonkey

  2. I was really excited about this app and immediately installed it on my PC and iPhone. Unfortunately, the app has one big limitation at the moment. It only indexes the C drive on the PC so unless you keep your data on the C drive, it will not be visible from other devices. The company’s web site says that indexing other drives is in the works. I sure hope so.

  3. Sounds like a good use for a Raspberry Pi with a giant external drive attached. Speaking of which, has anyone put out an Android-based router with NAS?
