NEC introduces a 15.6 inch ultrabook that’s just 0.5 inches thick

NEC’s newest ultrabook features a big screen… and a small case. The NEC LaVie X measures just 0.5 inches thick, but sports a spacious 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel display.

The ultrabook is expected to go on sale in Japan toward the end of December. Like most NEC laptops, I’d be surprised if the LaVie X was widely sold outside of Japan, where it will sell for north of $2100.

The notebook has an Intel Core i7-3517U processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 256GB solid state disk and runs Windows 8. NEC says the LaVie X will get up to 7 hours of battery life, charges in just 1 hour, and resumes from sleep in about 2 seconds.

It’s not just thin. It’s also pretty light for a 15.6 inch notebook, weighing about 3.5 pounds.

The notebook features WiFi, Bluetooth, HDMI, USB 3.0 and SDXC ports.

Wow, I didn’t know anyone sold laptops (yeah, I know it’s an “ultrabook” but whatever) with a 1920×1080 screen anymore. Seems like everyone settled on 1394 x 800.

There’s a good reason for the lower res display…. Win32 apps end up with tiny nearly unreadable text. Steer clear of high res displays on full Windows unless you have a large monitor 20+ inches, it’s only useful with Metro apps, pictures and movies.
