Acer Aspire V5-171

The Acer Aspire V5-171 is an inexpensive portable notebook that weighs about 3 pounds and which features an 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display. Starting prices for a model with a Core i5 processor are usually around $500.

But right now Amazon is selling a model with a slower Core i3 Sandy Bridge processor for $440. This model won’t be quite as fast or offer the same graphics performance as a model with an Ivy Bridge processor, but it should be more than fast enough to handle HD video playback and basic computing tasks.

  1. For $60 difference, I’d go for the Core i5. The i5 has turbo boost, which boosts performance quite a bit. The i3 doesn’t have it. If your goal is long battery life, get the i3.
