Before French device maker Archos started cranking out Android tablets, the company offered a range of portable media players. So while the company’s tablets might not always have the fastest processors or the best build quality, one area where they’ve always shined is in support for a wide range of multimedia files.

Now for the first time Archos is making its video player app available for Android devices that aren’t built by the company.

The Archos Video Player is available from the Google Play Store for $4.99.

Archos Video Player offers hardware-accelerated video playback for supported video formats and support for streaming videos from a shared drive or device on your network or from external USB devices.

The app also downloads images and data for TV shows and movies automatically, and has an option for downloading subtitles.

While there are plenty of video players for Android, the Archos app is one of the more versatile and attractive options I’ve seen. On the other hand, while $4.99 isn’t a lot of money, it’s about $4.99 more than some of the top Android video apps such as MX Player or Mobo Player.
