Skype overhauls Android app with tablet UI, Microsoft logins

Skype 3.0 for Android is available, and it brings a new tablet-friendly user interface, as well as the ability to sign in with an existing Skype ID or a Microsoft account. The move comes shortly after Microsoft announced plans to retire Windows Live Messenger and merge the service with Skype (which the company bought in 2011).

The new tablet UI takes advantage of the larger screens on 7 and 10 inch tablets to give you a sidebar for quick navigation and a central area to see contacts, calls, or other content.

Skype supports text, voice, and video communications, file sharing, and group conversations.

The new app also adds support for Skype’s SILK audio codec for improved audio quality.
