Sapphire is probably best known for producing PC graphics cards, but the company also has a line of mini-desktop computers which it sells under the Sapphire Edge brand. The latest is the Sapphire Edge VS8, which looks like a surprisingly powerful PC for a device that comes in such a small case.

The computer looks more like a modem or router than a full-fledged PC. But it features a quad-core AMD Trinity processor.

Sapphire Edge VS8

The Sapphire Edge VS8 packs a 1.6 GHz AMD A8 processor with Radeon HD 7600G graphics. That means the computer can handle HD video playback and DirectX 11 graphics

It also features a 500GB 2.5 inch hard drive, 4GB of RAM (with 2 sticks of 2GB memory), and Gigabit Ethernet as well as built-in WiFi and Bluetooth.

Sapphire includes an HDMI port, mini DisplayPort, 2 USB 3.0 ports, 4 USB 2.0 ports, an SD card reader, and audio jacks. The Edge VS8 measures 7.8″ x 7.2″ x 1.2 and weighs 1.5 pounds.

The computer ships with FreeDOS, but it can support Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8.

Unfortunately I haven’t seen any pricing information for this mini-desktop.

thanks Olivier!

  1. I’ll bet it generates a ton of heat and has a screaming little fan inside. I was hoping for ARM not AMD.

  2. Sound really interesting I wonder how much power this device uses and how it performs?

  3. Do you know of a machine with this form factor with an ARM processor?

      1. It’s funny, sometimes when I configure a PC with FreeDOS or Windows, the Windows version comes out cheaper even though everything else was the same. These were on HP and Dell business workstations.

        1. Every Trial Version, or Light Version with Upgrade Options, of Software OEMs like HP and Dell preload alongside windows, like Antivirus and the likes, makes them money, with potential bonuses if the user choses to get the upgrade.
If you configure machines without windows that means there is no way to bundle pre-installed bloatware, thus the lost revenue influences enduser prices negatively.

          1. Ya, I know that since it’s been well known for a long time. I was being sarcastic. I just find these “Microsoft tax” comments annoying where they’re usually from anti-MS people.
