The Lenovo IdeaPad S400 is a relatively slim and light notebook which you could easily confuse for an ultrabook. It has a 14 inch display, measures less than an inch thick, weighs less than 4 pounds, and features an Intel Core family processor.

In order to be a true ultrabook, the notebook would have to be a tiny bit thinner and would have to ship standard with at least a small solid state disk for caching purposes. But while Lenovo will offer an optional SSD, it’s not a standard feature.

The good news is that the S400 is cheaper than a typical ultrabook. You can pick one up today for about $520.

Lenovo doesn’t have the new notebook in stock at its online store yet, but you can order one from B&H or BuyDig for $519.99.

Both stores are offering a model with a 1.8 GHz Intel Core i3-317U Ivy Bridge CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard disk, and Windows 8 64-bit software.

The laptop features WiFi, Bluetooth, USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, a flash card reader, and HDMI output. It’s only expected to get up to 5 hours of battery life, but unlike most ultrabooks, the IdeaPad S400 has a removable battery.

Once Lenovo officially adds the laptop to its web store, you should eventually be able to configure the S400 with options including AMD Radeon graphics. For now it comes with Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics.

Lenovo also offers a cheaper S405 model with an AMD A6 processor. You can pick one up from Staples for just $430.

A 13.3 inch notebook called the IdeaPad S300 is also on the way.
