Samsung’s Galaxy Camera is what you get when you cross an Android smartphone with a camera. It has a 1.4 GHz Samsung Exynos quad-core processor, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean software, and a 4.8 inch touchscreen display. It also has a 21x optical zoom and a 16MP image sensor.

AT&T has announced it will begin selling the Samsung Galaxy Camera on November 16th. The AT&T model will feature HSPA+ support, letting you upload images to Facebook or Flickr from anywhere.

That’s the good news. The less good news is that AT&T will charge $499.99 for the camera. There’s no discount for signing up for a data plan.

You can save $100 if you buy a phone and the camera at the same time. AT&T is offering a limited time deal where you can get $100 off a “connected Samsung device” when you buy a Samsung Galaxy smartphone. That deal extends to the Galaxy Camera, and could drop the price to $399.99.

Or you could just buy a decent point-and-shoot camera for around $200 and wait until you get to your computer to upload photos, just like you’ve probably been doing for years.

  1. You guys are talking non-sense. Who cares if it is a PMP or whatever to sell a camera at $500 with two yr contract????? You have to be an idiot or very rich to buy this crap!!!!!! Hello Samsung are you living in the same world as the rest of us?

  2. I could see someone using this as a phone. Maybe. It’s about twice as thick as a typical smartphone – and probably inconveniently shaped to use as a phone – but the hardware’s there, even if ATT won’t let you use it. As it is, though, this thing doesn’t seem to fit anywhere. If I were to pay $500 for a camera, I’d be looking at low-end DSLRs, not a point-and-shoot that needlessly duplicates most of the features of a phone.

    1. Just because it runs Android doesn’t mean you have to compare it to a phone. Android is used on other devices too, like tablets and PMPs, and having a cellular modem doesn’t mean it has to function like a phone as can be noted by all the tablets and laptops with said modems.

So this is more a PMP with Point and Shoot capabilities and cellular modem for on the go Internet.

      1. That does make more sense. Still doesn’t explain why you’d pay $500 for a PMP, or even buy a phone and use that solely as a PMP instead.

        1. PMP by itself can go for less than $200, but this includes a cellular modem and they typically charge an additional ~$130. Then add the point and shoot camera and you’ll get around the same pricing.

Primary function is as a point and shoot, secondary is as PMP, and the cellular modem allows you to post pictures and do some social networking.

It’s not for everyone but those who want to have good photos, better than any camera phone can manage at least, may consider it a good option.
