Google Chrome OS is an operating system designed around a web browser. Chromebook and Chromebox devices look like standard computers, but since they only really run one program, they can boot more quickly and they don’t need as much storage as a traditional laptop.

But if you have a lot of documents, pictures, videos, or other files, you need a place to store them. Google Drive is as good a place as any, since Google’s online storage system works seamlessly with Chrome OS, letting you view your online documents in a file browser alongside any files on your device.

Google gives users up to 5GB of online storage for free. If you want more, you usually have to pay for it. But it looks like the company is preparing to offer 100GB to folks who purchase new Chrome OS devices.

Update: It’s official. Google is setting up customers who buy a new Chromebook or Chromebox with 100GB of free storage for 2 years.

Google Drive 100GB promo

Developer François Beaufort was looking through the latest Chromium OS code, and he noticed a section mentioning a “new Drive promo.”

When you delve into the code, it looks like the promo involves 100GB of Google Drive space, which will be redeemed at drive.google.com/redeem, a website which isn’t active yet.

Beaufort also notes that the promo won’t be available for users that have some of the earliest Chrome OS devices including the Cr-48, Acer AC700, or the original Samsung Series 5 Chromebook. It may be available for the newer Samsung Series 5 Chromebook 550 and other new devices including any new Chrome OS hardware announced in time for the holidays.
