Archos Arnova FamilyPad 13.3 inch tablet specs revealed

The Arnova FamilyPad is a new large-screen Android tablet from Archos. We spotted it at the FCC website this summer, and recently Archos Slovenia posted a few more details.

Now ARMDevices has posted a hands-on video showing the tablet in action. We finally have a detailed list of specifications for the 13.3 inch Android tablet.

Arnova FamilyPad

Archos hasn’t announced a price for the tablet yet, but the company tends to use the Arnova brand name for its more affordable products. The FamilyPad also has a relatively slow (and inexpensive) 1 GHz Allwinner A10 ARM Cortex-A8 processor, which will help keep the price down.

Other specs include:

  • 13.3 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display
  • 10-point capacitive multitouch panel
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB storage
  • 2MP front camera, 2MP rear camera
  • Stereo speakers
  • Built-in mic
  • 2 USB ports, 1 mini HDMI port, 1 microSD card slot, audio jack
  • 5-6 hours of battery life for web browsing, 8-10 hours when watching video

Archos will also offer a stand that lets you prop up the tablet for watching videos, reading recipes in the kitchen, or doing whatever else you plan to do with a 13.3 inch tablet that can stand up.

When you lie the tablet flat on the tablet, it’s a decent size for playing multi-player games, and you can check out a brief Glow Hockey match toward the end of the video.

The tablet is expected to launch in the next month or two. Archos may also offer a model with a higher resolution, 1440 x 900 pixel display.

My guess $299 for the 1280×800 version, if there also is a 1440×900 one it may be a bit more expensive, maybe $349, something like that. Those types of large capacitive screens aren’t yet fully mass produced thus not the cheapest feature.

There you are. We thought you had thrown in the towell. What we really needed from Archos was something new to compete with the ipod.

Thrown in the towell? I got 20 million youtube views on 2800 videos, I video-blogged 65 videos at IFA last month. I can’t post much when there aren’t conferences in July-August. Archos is always years ahead of the competition especially Apple.

We thought you gave up defending Archos because it was a futile effort. I knew you were busy with the ARM stuff.

Perhaps some day you’ll understand how Archos is the most innovative company in the world. About 1 billion times more innovative than Apple. Archos was making tablets while Apple didn’t even have a color screen on their ipod.

Does the fact that it is going through FCC approval mean that it will be sold in the USA? (I think most Archos devices are available in the USA anyway but just wondering)

I like the idea of a larger screen. But other Android devices with this size screen have had the problem of not having the apps be able to really take advantage of the extra screen real estate. Epecially if they are going to be making tablets with higher resolution like 1440×900, they really need to address this issue.
