Samsung Galaxy Camera shoots photos… zombies (gaming on a camera)

The Samsung Galaxy Camera is a 16 megapixel point-and-shoot camera with a 21X zoom lens and a 4.8 inch touchscreen LCD. Oh yeah, it also has a 1.4 GHz quad-core processor and runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

While that means you can use the phone to upload snapshots to Facebook or Instagram over WiFi, it also means you can run a wide range of Android apps — including games.

The folks at Mobile Geeks decided to see how this camera functioned as a portable gaming device. Since it’s basically got the guts of a Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone it should come as no surprise that it handles most games with ease.

Graphics look pretty good, the touchscreen is responsive, and everything seems to run pretty quickly.

The best thing about using a camera as a mobile gaming device? If you run down the battery, you can still receive phone calls (assuming your phone battery is charged). The worst thing? You may not be able to document that family vacation you bought the camera for.

why does no one just put a really nice camera on a phone and market it as a phone with a nice camera? Companies who do this camera+android thing are just afraid that the point and shoot is going out of buisness. (which it is, for now)

what is really interesting is apps that exploit this for 3d, timelapse, computational imaging and remote operation. Consider mounting this on a tripod and then controlling it through your phone.
