Intel has been showing off a tiny desktop computer called the Next Unit of Computing, or NUC since April. It’s a 4 inch by 4 inch computer that packs an Intel Core i3 processor, mSATA port, two memory slots, 3 USB ports, HDMI, and Ethernet.

Now the company has announced that the NUC will be available for purchase in October.

Update: Well, that didn’t happen. Now Intel says the NUC will be available in the first quarter of 2013.

Intel NUC

Final pricing hasn’t been set, but the NUC is expected to sell for less than $400 when you buy a model with a case, power supply, and solid state disk. Intel may also sell a CPU and motherboard-only option.

In other words, you can pick up 11 Raspberry Pi or half a dozen MK802-style mini computers for about the same price as an NUC.

But Intel’s solution offers a much more powerful computing experience and support for Windows 7, Windows 8, or pretty much any other operating system that can run on an x86 processor.

  1. Nothing new. Via Technologies has had their PicoITX, NanoITX platforms for years. Plus $400 is ridiculous, that no different from a regular computer with many more bells & whistles. Lower the price and maybe people will buy. not me though. ARM all the way.

  2. I could see myself getting a couple of these. A Plex Media Server would be really nice on one.

    1. On the other hand, VGA really is 25 years old. Maybe we can let it rest?

  3. I guess it’ll have the HD4000 graphics? Should be a pretty capable basic home computer, for the money, and hard to beat on size.
