Samsung’s next-generation chips for phones and tablets is a powerhouse that can handle display resolutions up to 2560 x 1600 pixels, 1080p HD video playback at 60 frames per second and stereographic 3D graphics.

The Samsung Exynos 5 Dual is due out later this year. It’s a 1.7 GHz dual-core processor, and one of the first chips based on an ARM Cortex-A15 design. It will also be one of the first chips to use ARM’s Mali T604 graphics.

Samsung says the chip is designed for premium tablets that need support for multitasking and multi-window operation. That’s important because Samsung has been introducing features in its Android phones and tablets that let you do things like watch a video in a small window while running another window.

We could also see Windows 8 devices with this type of processor.

The move from Cortex-A9 to Cortex-A15 alone could result in a 40 percent performance boost. But the Exynos 5 Dual is also a 32nm chip with a higher clock speed than any of Samsung’s earlier ARM Cortex-A9 processors which were all based on 45nm designs.

The new processor also features faster memory than Exynos 4 Dual chips and support for USB 3.0.

  1. I’m interested in the USB 3.0 support. It would be nice to transfer files faster and maybe also charge my phone faster from a PC.
