The HP TouchPad may have shipped with the webOS operating system, but people have been installing custom versions of Google Android on the 9.7 inch tablet for months. Running Android on the HP TouchPad allows you to install hundreds of thousands of apps that aren’t available for webOS, and Google’s operating system generally feels more responsive than the default operating system on HP’s hardware.

Unfortunately there have been a few hardware compatibility issues with the latest builds of Android 4.0 for the Touchpad. Up until recently you couldn’t use the microphone or camera while running Android 4.0.

While the camera is still non-functional, developer jcsullins is working on an audio patch that allows you to use the HP TouchPad when running the latest nightly builds of CyanogenMod 9 for the tablet.

HP TouchPad with Skype (mic fix)

You can download the latest audiolibs files from the jscullins cmtouchpad testing area at goo.im and use ClockworkMod Recovery or TWRP to flash the update on your TouchPad.

Update: The patch has been incorporated into the latest nightlies, so you no longer need to install it separately.

If that sounds complicated, you should check out our guide for installing CyanogenMod 9 (Android 4.0) on the HP TouchPad and scroll down to step 11 for tips on installing additional packages.

If you’re already running CyanogenMod 9 on your TouchPad, the simplest way to install the mic fix (or update to the latest nightly) is to use GooManager. It’s a free app that lets you install the TWRP custom recovery and find and install ROMs and other patches compatible with your Android device.

To use GooManager to download audiolibs, choose the “Browse all files,” navigate to the “devs” folder, scroll down until you find “jcsullins,” and navigate to the /cmoutouchpad/testing folder and select and download the most recent audiolibs file.

Once that’s done, you can use the “Flash ROMs ” option to select the files you want to install and wait while your device reboots and applies the update.

Note that there’s also an older file called “mictest,” but you don’t need to use this — the newer audiolibs files include the patch.

In fact, if you’re the patient type, eventually you may not need to install any of these patches. Right now the audiolibs package is a work in progress. Once it’s finished, it will probably be incorporated into the main brainch of CyanogenMod 9 for the HP TouchPad.

For now, I can confirm that the microphone works with Skype for Android. It may not work with every Android app though.

There’s no word on if or when we’ll see a camera fix for CyanogenMod 9 on the HP TouchPad — HP hasn’t released camera drivers for Android 4.0, and reverse engineering them would take a lot of work.

  1. Does ICS audio work on the HP yet? I’ve been hearing issues…If I cannot get a working music player in ICS, it’s pretty useless. At least Web OS works.

  2. i dit not found the audiolibs – there were only 2 files there – touch_pressure and headphone_detection –
whére can i find the autiolibs that skype works? Thanks

  3. i installed this rom and now my wifi antenna doesnt work. i cannot connect to my wifi on my touchpad. can anyone help?

  4. I tried the latest nightly on 6/22/2012 and got the mic work on my Skype. But now, I can’t access the shop for apps. Every time I touch the Shop icon on the top right corner, the screen just flashed showing the word “loading” and back to the original screen.

Could you tell what the problem is?

    Thanks

  5. Haha. Thought I bricked my TP, because my computer wouldn’t recognize the TP, I couldn’t get the TP to start up, and plugging in the charger didn’t do anything. Holding down the restart button and the home button at the same time got it to come back on. It booted into moboot, but Cyanogenmod wasn’t an option to boot into, so I went into the clockworkmod program and manually installed the nightly update from the cminstall folder. Not sure if this is what is supposed to be done or if Android should have already been installed, but this worked. Now, I just have to figure out how to get to the Android Market!

  6. Mebbe it’s just me, but I still prefer WebOS over Android ICS and iPad.

      1. WebOS is clean and intuitive. Hope Google adopts it and does some work on it.

    1. I agree.. WebOS on a touch pad clocked at 1.8ghz is very smooth and far more intuitive than android. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad I can boot into ICS for Netflix, but I think WebOS has a lot going for it – even though on the Touchpad its missing some expected OS functionality (like user accounts)

  7. Have they fixed the headphone jack issue? I’d love to listen to my music with my headset.. haha

    1. I thought I had a headset issue too until I read a post which said to insert headset before launching application. Headset issue gone.
