The reason Apple refers to the 3.5 inch, 960 x 640 pixel screen on the iPhone as a “retina” display is because at 326 pixels per inch, the pixels are packed so tightly that you can’t tell one from the other while holding the phone a reasonable distance from your eyes.
LG apparently missed the memo, because the company’s new 5 inch screen has a 440 ppi display resolution.
The screen measures 5 inches diagonally and has a 16:9 aspect ratio. It can handle full 1080p HD video thanks to a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution.
The 5 inch screen uses IPS display technology for wide viewing angles.
LG will start showing off the display at trade shows next week and plans to release it during the second half of 2012. No word on when we might start to see products using the new display hit the market.

The downside? Any mobile device packing this thing has a three minute battery life…
