The Toshiba Excite 7.7 is Toshiba’s first tablet with an AMOLED display. The tablet has a 7.7 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel Gorilla Glass display, an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, and Android 4.0 operating system.

It has 1GB of RAM and will be available with 16GB or 32GB of storage when it ships in June.

Unfortunately, AMOLED displays don’t come cheap, which is why the Excite 7.7 will have a starting price of $499.99 — or about $50 more than the base price for the company’s new 10 inch tablet.

The 32GB model will run $579.99.

The Toshiba Excite 7.7 has 2MP front-facing camera an da 5MP rear camera, microUSB and microSD card slots, and stereo speakers.

It measures 0.3 inches thick and weighs 0.84 pounds. Toshiba imagines customers gravitating toward this model for reading eBooks, playing games, watching videos and other activities. But those who want a larger display can look to the company’s 10 inch or 13.3 inch Android tablets.

The larger models may not have the same AMOLED display as the Excite 7.7, but they do have micro HDMI ports and full-sized SD card slots. The Toshiba Excite 13 also has a high resolution 1600 x 900 pixel display.

  1. my apologies, there are some 7″, but most of the ones listed are still the 10.1″.  The 7″ is available, but for more specialized applications.

  2. Check out Pixel Qi’s website or blog, there are about a dozen products now with Pixel Qi screens.  I think JoyPlus, and one or two others are promoting one with a 7″ screen.  ZTE is supposed to be coming out with one, but I haven’t seen anything but demo’s yet.  I think there was also a French company, EviPad (?).  As usual, resort to Google or Youtube searches.

  3. I have a friend who is a small plane pilot.  Garmin has an Android OS app for Pilot GPS Navigation with Weather.  But, in such planes you need a Pixel Qi screen.  Where is main stream, ICS, GPS, Android tablet with USB (to hub for keyboard, flash disks, cd/dvd rom access, etc), HDMI, ports, Pixel Qi (that will fit into a man’s jacket pocket – 7 inch is best), that is affordable?   If someone came out with this device, every small plane pilot would buy one.  The Archos 80 G9 comes close (too bad that the regular size USB in back is limited and can’t use as a typical USB port), but Pixel Qi is not doing an 8 inch screen.  Maybe a little too big, but don’t need 10.1 inch, just something that will mount easily in view for pilot (on dash or other).
