There’s no shortage of custom firmware available for the Amazon Kindle Fire at this point. But if you prefer the stock Kindle Fire application suite with a few extra tweaks rather than a complete CyanogenMod-style makeover, you might want to check out the latest version of MoDaCo ROM for the Kindle Fire.

Developer Paul O’Brien has updated his software so that it’s based on Kindle Fire Software version 6.3. That means you get the improved Whispersync experience, support for eBook extras, sharing of passages, and improved wireless. But you also get root access to the operating system.

MoDaCo ROM includes the Google Service Framework and comes with the Google Play Store preloaded, allowing you to download apps either from Google’s or Amazon’s app stores.

The tablet also identifies itself to the Google Play Store as a Samsung Galaxy Tab, so you should be able to download most apps for Android 2.3 and earlier that work with a 1024 x 600 pixel display.

O’Brien’s ROM also includes network location information that can be used to identify your location in Google Maps and other applications, an optional Twitter client, and other tweaks.

You can install the ROM on any Kindle Fire that’s been rooted as long as TWRP or ClockworkMod Recovery are loaded.
