The Asus U32U is a new thin and light laptop from Asus. It looks a bit like an ultrabook, but measuring about 0.9 inches thick, it’s just a little too chunky to qualify. More importantly, the Asus U32U is powered by an AMD processor, and Intel owns the trademark on the word “ultrabook.”

So let’s just call it a laptop, albeit a portable model with a 13.3 inch display and a lower prie tag than most ultrabooks.

The notebook will be available with a choice of an AMD C-50, AMD C-60, or AMD E-450 processor. The higher the model number, the more powerful the chip — but these are all budget, low-power processors. Don’t expect bleeding edge performance from the Asus U32U.

But these AMD processors all feature AMD Radeon HD graphics, which means that the notebooks should be able to handle 1080p HD video playback without breaking a sweat… as well as some light gaming duties.

Asus will offer models with 320GB or 500GB hard drives and 44Whr or 83Whr batteries. All models will come with 1 USB 3.0 port, 2 USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, VGA, mic, and headphone jacks.

The computer has a 1366 x 768 pixel display and supports up to 8GB of memory.

If you get a model with the smaller battery, it will weigh about 3.4 pounds. The higher capacity battery increases the weight to 3.9 pounds.

A few German retailers are already selling the Asus U32U with an AMD E-450 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 44Whr battery for €499, or about $656. It will likely be cheaper if and when it goes on sale in the US.
