The second Cedar Trail netbook from Asus is now available for purchase in the US. On paper the new Eee PC 1025C looks a lot like the Eee PC X101CH I reviewed recently. But for a few extra dollars you get a few bonus features.

Amazon is selling the Eee PC 1025C for $299.99.

Asus Eee PC 1025C

Like the Eee PC X101CH, the new netbook has a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N2600 dual core processor and a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, as well as 1GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive.

But the Eee PC 1025C has 3 USB ports rather than 2, and in some regions Asus offers a model with a USB 3.0 port. The computer also has a 6 cell battery rather than a 3 cell which should provide at least twice as much battery life. That’s a good thing, because in my tests, the Eee PC X101CH didn’t get much more than 3 hours of run time on a charge.

The Eee PC X1025C also looks a little nicer than the cheaper model thanks to metallic panels on the side.

Unfortunately there’s no RAM access panel on the bottom of the laptop, and Asus says the memory is fixed to the motherboard which means you won’t be able to upgrade the RAM.

Update: It looks like it may be possible to upgrade the memory on at least some models — but it’s not easy. You have to disassemble the laptop, remove the motherboard, and flip it over in order to get at the RAM.

  1. Neither memory or HD were soldered on mine (bought in France). But it’s a nightmare to gain access to the RAM slot. You have to completly dismantle it, even the processor’s fan. Upgraded with a SSD and 2Go RAM, it becomes un damn good laptop. Only downside in my opinion, the position of the right shift key is totally dumb.

  2. It’s unfortunate that these Cedar Trail ASUS computers don’t allow the memory to be upgraded.  🙁  Right now, the best Cedar Trail netbook looks to be the HP Mini 210-4150NR, which doesn’t have an HDMI port, but has two audio jacks (headphone, mic) as well as the ability to upgrade its ram (it’s even possible to buy it, at the right price, with a N2800, Windows 7 home premium, and 2 gigs of memory)
