NEC unveils dual-screen smartphone

NEC has been offering a dual-screen Android tablet in Japan since last year, and the company plans to launch a new version internationally this summer. But the Cloud Communicator may not be the only dual screen device on NEC’s roadmap.

The company plans to show off a new dual-screen Android smartphone concept at Mobile World Congress in Spain next week.

Japanese site GetNews has a few photos of a non-functional prototype, which appears to have the Android user interface taped onto a frame.

But the pictures paint an interesting picture of a tablet with touchscreen displays on the front and back panels. When you want to use the two screens together as one large display for viewing movies, surfing the web, or other activities, you just unfold the tablet.

The device would run Google Android 4.0 and support 4G LTE, but there’s not much more information available at this point.

The Kyocera Echo is one of the smartest phones which never hit big, all because of talk, talk, talk. How many of those criticizing the Kyocera Echo actually had it in their hands? Mostly, it had good reviews from users, like Michael Nace of the iPhone5News blog. Micahel Nace wrote about the Kyocera that his wife
“LOVES the dual screen, as do I. It isn’t like those clam shell designs that people talk about; the screen sort of clicks out and unhinges in a graceful way, and clicks easily into place. I have to say that the hinge mechanism is incredibly well built, and shows absolutely no sign of wear. She likes it because she can fold out the dual screens and play video on it for our kids in the car, and they get a nice, big screen to look at. You can also set the phone up with the screens perpendicular to one another, so that it takes on the shape and ergonomics of a mini laptop.”

Coming from an Apple products review blogger, that is fair praise.

    Thanx for listening.

Bring on the NEC dual screen phone! :)
