Google Docs for Android can now store docs for offline access

Google has rolled out an updated version of Google Docs for Android. It includes better support for tablets and the ability to download documents to your mobile device so you can view them when you’re not online.

Google Docs offline

You still can’t edit documents when you’re offline. But if you make any changes to a document using the Google Docs web interface, Google will automatically sync those changes with your downloaded copy the next time you connect your Android phone or tablet to the internet over WiFi. You can also manually sync your documents over 3G or 4G.

Honestly, you might be better off with a third party office suite such as QuickOffice Pro or Documents To Go which lets you create, edit, and manage documents whether you’re online or off — and which can synchronize those documents with Google Docs.

But if you’re looking for a free option and don’t need to edit your docs when you’re offline anyway, the latest version of Google Docs is definitely an improvement — especially for tablet users thanks to new high-resolution document support and tablet-friendly controls.

Google Docs for Android is available as a free download from the Android Market.

I’m using a Galaxy Note and I’ve noticed a serious overhaul to the app apart from the offline thing….frankly, before it didn’t even sync properly! Now it feels a lot more polished and well, it just works better.

It’s okay for what it is, but pretty disappointing that is does not have full editing support on tablets.  I have a feeling that Google is only going to add that when Chrome is available for Android.
