NEC dual-screen tablet going international this summer

NEC Coud Communicator dual-screen tabletThe NEC Cloud Communicator dual-screen Android tablet made its first appearance in the US during the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show. But while the tablet went on sale in Japan last summer, it’s not yet available outside of that country.

But the dual screen tablet has come a long way since I saw it last year. NEC has worked with software partners to develop apps to take advantage of the dual screen layout. For instance, you can view a PowerPoint presentation in one window while taking notes in a second window — something which could come in handy in a business or education setting.

NEC also plans to launch an updated model of the dual screen tablet this summer. It will feature a TI OMAP4 dual core processor and Google Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, as well as a thinner and lighter design than the current model.

Too bad the tablet was in landscape orientation the whole time. Would have been nice to see some interaction with it as a “book” rather than a two-screen laptop.

Seems like the problem of running one app pr screen is that Android process scheduling expects only one app to have focus at a time and stops updating the others to save cpu time.
