Closer look at the Asus Eee PC 2012 lineup

Asus introduced four new Eee PC models today. The Eee PC X101CH is a new $269 mini-laptop with a 10 inch display, an Intel Atom N2600 Cedar Trail processor, and a 3 cell battery.

The Eee PC 1025C and 1025CE are a little fancier, thanks to higher capacity batteries, an extra USB port, and the option for a model with a USB 3.0 port and faster Atom N2800 chip.

For those looking for a bit more power and a bigger screen and keyboard, there’s the Eee PC 1225B with a 1.65 GHz AMD E-450 processor, 12.1 inch display, and $399 price tag.

I got a chance to check out three of the new notebooks at CES this week, although it looks like there may be a bit more variation than I thought. The Eee PC 1225B display model, for instance, had a 1.33 GHz AMD C-60 processor, for instance.

Does the 1225B have a metal palmrest? I can’t tell from pictures or the video, but it looks like some kind of metal shell. Or is it just very convincing plastic? How about the rest of the body? Also, I read somewhere that it is available in white, but those pics look to be just brushed aluminum. Are my eyes deceiving me or is that just straight up silver?

I believe it’s just metallic-looking plastic. The design is very similar to previous budget 12.1 inch notebooks from Asus including the Eee PC 1215B and UL20 series.

Which models have matte screens? x101ch looks matte but it is really hard to tell from those screenshots. Glossy vs matte is the single most ignored spec in netbook tech reports I think, to my great frustration since I’m very anti-glossy.

Looks like the ten inch models are matte, the 12 inch is not… but these may not be final production units. Those details could change.

Asus tends to vary the screen options a bit depending on region it is being sold in. So always check from where you’re getting it. Though the AMD Fusion models tend to be sold with Glossy displays.

So you may have to opt for a Intel system if you want Matte or a different brand, like Lenovo’s Thinkpads are one of the few with matte screen options for AMD Fusion based systems.

Though a so called invisible glass was demonstrated not long ago that basically eliminates reflection. So non-matte displays may be a whole lot easier to deal with once they start using that treated glass in about a year or so.
