HP TouchPad

HP may not be selling the TouchPad anymore, but the company continues to push software updates for the tablet. The folks at PreCentral received word that a release candidate for webOS 3.0.5 is now available for participants in the webOS Early Access Program.

For the most part, this will be a bug fix release. Updates include:

  • HTML5 video will work in all screen orientations.
  • A double-space will be placed after a period.
  • Low disk space alerts

The update will also have a new sensor API for applications designed using the PDK, and a few other bug fixes and improvements.

In other words, you probably shouldn’t expect a huge performance boost or any major changes in the operating system, but it’s nice to see that HP is continuing to offer updates for folks that haven’t decided to give up on webOS and run Android on the TouchPad tablet.

  1. the biggest issue currently is the accelerator breaking in a previous release. HP please fix!

  2. They should add meaningful improvement instead of these ultra-minor bug/feature fixes.

Like: Hw-accelerated video decoder plugins so that you can watch your divx movie on the Touchpad.

The Touchpad is a very crippled device in its current state. I even had to install a chrooted Ubuntu in order to watch videos.

    1. For a mere $7 (it’s $5 right now on sale) you can get a program by KalemSoft called Media Player that’ll play basically any video format, even reportedly some in 1080p as well. I tried it out on a 720p MKV and it worked a charm. Give it a shot before saying it’s crippled. 🙂
