Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich coming to the Kindle Fire (unofficially)

Amazon Kindle Fire with Android 4.0

Sure, installing CyanogenMod 7 on an Amazon Kindle Fire is cool and all. But xda-developers forum member x1011999 decided to skip Android 2.3 Gingerbread and port Google Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to run on Amazon’s $199 tablet.

He’s already got Android 4.0 booting on the tablet. Touch input works, as does hardware graphics acceleration. But the list of things that don’t work properly yet is still pretty long:

  • Audio
  • WiFi
  • Accelerometer
  • Light sensor

In other words, while g1011999 plans to release the code soon, this build is really aimed at developers who might be able to help get things working. Still, I’m pretty impressed at how quickly someone has ported Android 4.0 to the tablet.

The Kindle Fire has only been available for a few weeks, and the same is true of the source code for Ice Cream Sandwich.
