Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1N

It’s the same old story. Boy meets girl. Boy sues girl for producing a tablet that looks too much like boy’s tablet. Girl introduces a new tablet with a slightly different design. Boy sues again in hopes of prohibiting girl from selling that tablet in Germany either.

Oh wait, that’s not the plot of a romantic comedy. It’s a slightly anthropomorphic retelling of the dance that Apple and Samsung have been going through in German courts.

This summer Apple successfully sued to prohibit Samsung’s German division from selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Germany, claiming it infringed on Apple’s design rights for the iPad 2.

Earlier this month Samsung responded by launching a redesigned tablet called the Galaxy Tab 10.1N. It’s only available in Germany at the moment, and it looks a lot like a normal Galaxy Tab 10.1. It just has a bit more chrome around the edges, a move that’s likely designed to get around some of the design claims made by Apple.

Now Apple is seeking to ban Samsung from selling the new tablet in Germany as well. A hearing has been scheduled for December 22nd. Samsung is apparently free to sell the Galaxy Tab 10.1N until then, but Apple is asking for an injunction that would make the new tablet just as scarce in Germany as the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

The door isn’t entirely closed on that tablet though… Samsung has appealed the ruling that prohibits the company from selling its original 10 inch Android tablet and an appeals court will hear that argument a few days before the December 22nd hearing.

  1. apple is afraid of Samsung pure and simple because Samsung makes a surperior product.

  2. “…make the new tablet just as scarce in Germany as the Galaxy Tab 10.1.”
is just not true. Here in Germany the original 10.1 can be ordered with next-day delivery from Amazon.de as well as a lot of other sites. It always has been since its introduction in Germany. This is really some of the best, free advertising that Samsung could have gotten. It is telling the world “if you want a viable alternative to the iPad2, then Samsung Galaxy 10.1 is the one”.

  3. I really hope that Apple loses and if they do I hope Samsung drops their suit or loses that one as well.  All these lawsuits benefit the consumer 0% and the lawyers 100%.

  4. I wonder if apple execs really think they can avoid the inevitable, seeing all iOS devices relegated to a small market share? I don’t really see Android tablets as the main threat to the ipad’s current market lead–it’ll be Win8 tablets that stomp on that. In order for apple to garner widespread appeal they have to change some business philosophies. . . and I don’t see that happening any time soon, if ever.

    1. I realy don’t see Windows 8 being all that successfull.
Windows 8 is essentialy Windows 7 with a Metro Style start menu, additional HTML5 apps, and ARM support.

The apeal of Windows as a mobile OS is existing windows apps runing on the go. A lot of businesses use proprietary legacy apps, specificaly taiolored to their needs, written to run on windows x86.

In the foreseeable future x86 chips will not be able to compete with ARM chips on power efficiency, so Win8 x86 will be plagued by the same main drawback Win7 x86 is now.
Even if that situation improves, the reason people want windows (because it runs all their existing windows apps) does nothing to address the fact that most existing apps UIs don’t play well with (Finger-)Touch Input.
Even the best onscreen keyboards are less productive then physcial ones for any kind of REAL work.

Win8 for ARM addresses the battery runtime issue, but will not run x86 software.
So Win8 ARM apps will have to be: Redesigned for touch input, recompiled (if not rewritten) for ARM, or even built from scratch.

The whole reason why Windows on the Go would be more attractive then competing OS’es is thrown out the windows with Win8 Arm Tablets.

What you end up with is a tablet that runs a UI that is essentialy a tablet version of WindowsPhone7, but Touchscreen apps have to be built from scratch, a pre-existing library of software does not exist as you need to at least recompile it for the new platform and a lot of windows software is not open source meaning you’re at the mercy of the software makers.

In the end it’s nothing but another platform, that has nothing going for it besides “Microsoft made it”.
