T-Mobile and Walmart have announced that starting October 16th customers will be able to sign up for a 4G service plan for just $30 per month. The deal will be only be available at T-Mobile.com or in-stores at a Walmart location.

Walmart T-Mobile

The new plan is available without a contract, and for $30 per month you get:

  • Up to 5GB of HSPA+ 4G data
  • Unlimited data at 2G speeds once you hit the 5GB limit
  • Unlimited text messaging
  • 100 minutes of talk

I just looked at my phone bills for the past few months, and it looks like I typically use less than 1GB of data and fewer than 100 minutes of talk time, so I could probably save quite a bit of cash under the new plan… but my current phone doesn’t have an HSPA+ radio so I wouldn’t get to take full advantage of the offer unless I bought a new phone at full price. Since this is a pre-paid, contract-free plan you won’t find any cheap, subsidized smartphones as part of the deal.

The press release doesn’t mention any tablets, so it sounds like the new offer from T-Mobile and Walmart is aimed at smartphone owners that use data more often than voice on their phones.

  1. On the other hand, if you were able to theoretically use all 42MBps download speed of the HSPA+ network, you’d finish that 5GB allowance in about 121 seconds.

    So there’s that downside.

  2. T-mobile is SIM based though so you should be able to switch the SIM into a tablet. Right?

  3. and the phone in the ad is one ugly phone for $199.00.  my treo 700wx is paid for and works great, and i am no longer on a contract as i have been with the same carrier for 15 years now.
