Dell 7 update

Over the past week Dell has begun rolling out a software update for the Streak 7 tablet, bringing Google Android 3.2 Honeycomb to the 7 inch tablet. Today the company confirmed that the software is rolling out across the US, Europe and Asia for customers with WiFi-only tablets as well as for customers with unlocked 3G tablets.

That’s the good news.

The bad news is that the software update will not be available for T-Mobile Dell Streak 7 owners, which means that if you picked up your tablet from T-Mobile in the US, you’re stuck with Google Android 2.2 Froyo. That shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, since T-Mobile pretty much discontinued the tablet this summer. You can still pick up a refurbished model from T_Mobile for under $100 though.

T-Mobile users might be able to install a custom ROM based on Android 3.2, but the official update won’t be made available.

Dell also notes that users with rooted tablets won’t be able to install the update.

The Dell Streak 7 tablet features a 1 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core processor and a 7 inch, 800 x 480 pixel display. It has 16GB of storage and 512MB of RAM.

The Android 3.2 Honeycomb update will add Google’s new tablet-friendly user interface to the tablet as well as an enhanced version of Dell’s Stage user inter interface.

  1. Good old stupid Android and the people who support its validity by purchasing devices saddled with it.

I wish Microsoft would stop letting all devices enjoy such needless and undesirable experiences such as updating to the latest service pack or upgrading to the latest version of Windows.  Thank God Android came a long and helped computing “evolve” beyond such rotten-to-the-core travesties.  Even stupid Debian allows such failure through its “apt-get” malware.

Consumers should be obliged to buy new hardware when new software becomes available.  It just makes sense.  Old hardward should become obsolete not because of new hardware but because of new software.
