It’s been a few days since HP started liquidating the 9.7 inch HP TouchPad tablet with webOS 3.0 — and the tablet has gone from one of the worst selling consumer electronics devices to one of the most sought-after products. It’s funny what slashing the price from $399 to $99 will do.

HP TouchPad

Unfortunately it’s still very hard to come by a $99 Touchpad in the wild. Staples is still showing a listing for the 32GB model for $149, but the tablet appears to be out of stock online and in most stores. Last night Amazon had a few units for a few moments, but those quickly sold out. But there are still a few places to find cheap TouchPads.

Barnes & Noble

Book store Barnes & Noble is selling the 16GB HP TouchPad for $101.95 plus tax and shipping. This deal only seems to be good on the B&N website. There’s no way to arrange for in-store pickup.

I don’t expect these to last long.

And… they’re gone.

Harvey Norman (Australia)

The HP TouchPad was only on sale in Australia for a few days before HP announced it was canceling the tablet. But today there are reports that retailer Harvey Norman is selling the TouchPad for just $98 today. A number of people have confirmed this in the OzBargain forum — but stores appear to be selling out rather quickly.

eBay

At $99 the HP TouchPad makes a pretty good eReader, web surfing device, or portable media player. But some people are picking them up for other reasons — either to tinker and install an alternate operating system such as Ubuntu or Android, or to sell for a profit.

You can already find TouchPads going for low prices on eBay. Sure, you won’t find many $99 deals on eBay, but you might be able to score one for less than last week’s suggested retail price of $399 for a 16GB model and $499 for a 32GB TouchPad.

Full price options

A handful of retailers are still selling the tablets for full price. Radio Shack still has units in stock, and Geeks.com is actually charging more than the old suggested retail prices. It might be worth keeping an eye on these stores to see if prices fall.

  1. Thanks for the heads up about BN. Com. I was able to order 2. Hope it works.

  2. Why didn’t the WebOS TouchPad not sell fast before?  Many factors.
However, HP and other tablet makers are not reading the economy correctly.

They should push their suppliers for LOWER prices so that the products can sell in the US at the prices they should (cheaper than Apple by a margin).  And, HP trying to copy Apple, well, only Apple can get away with 1024×768.   Everyone that HP was competing with, have much higher resolutions, and better specs, than Apple & with Android.  That is why Apple is suing to stop Samsun Galaxy Tab (because the device rocks).  HP should have sold this WebOS thing for much less from the start (and sold it with dual boot Android and WebOS, to give time for developers to use the same device for both products, and in time, there would be WebOS apps that would show up).   Users could use both and choose from both app stores.

Hmmm, and HP could even have allowed other Linux distros, like Lubuntu, run in a VM on Android (or WebOS could come up with a VM for even Microsoft OS to run on their tablet)…for those that want to run another OS (note that Ubuntu in the Android VM).

Anyway, the VM method is a bit slower, but Lubuntu or LXDE would be very
quick due to it being much faster than either Ubuntu or Kubuntu
    anyway).

  3. I snapped up one from Barnes & Noble today.  It was about $114 after taxes and shipping.  Not too shabby!

I’m not entirely sure what I’m going to do with it yet but it can at least join the $90 nettop I picked up from Dell (with the purcahse of another laptop) as a sofa surfer!

I’m sure there will be Android ports as well.  Hopefully they will offer dual-boot options (like are available for the Nook Color) so I don’t have to lose WebOS entirely.  It actually has several advantages over Android.

  4. I also am going to keep an eye on HP’s small business site like Eric mentioned. I am trying to check out Barnes and Nobel’s site and they must be having loads of issues because the site wont even load for me.

I’ll keep trying though. I don’t know if I’m persistant or crazy, but I’ll keep trying. So far I’ve been one step behind this whole time since Saturday morning.

  5. Bought my 32GB Touchpad on July 1.  Got my $50 Palm Pre credit immediately from Best Buy.  Got my $50 app credit. Yesterday, got my $430 credit from Best Buy, making my net cost for my 32GB Touchpad, $99.99 plus tax.  Since webOs is still going to be developed, I am extremely happy.  The Touchpad for my uses is/was the best tablet on the market.

  6. Just keep an eye on HP’s small business website.  They have been allowing orders sporadically throughout the weekend.  An order page for the 32GB popped online around 10pm CDT last night and I got one within 20 mins.  The site was crashing all over the place, but persistence won the day.

Going forward, HP will be a more reliable source, as many retail outlets are shipping their excess inventory back to the mothership.
