HP TouchPad

Sure, HP plans to get out of the webOS hardware business in the next few months, but the company had already placed orders for a shiny new HP TouchPad tablet with 64GB of storage and a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual core processor. So before closing up the TouchPad shop, HP has gone ahead and started taking orders for the new model.

The original TouchPad feature 16GB to 32GB of storage and a 1.2 GHz dual core Snapdragon chip. Those models launched last month for $499 and $599 respectively, but HP has since knocked $100 off the price. That means the new lineup is:

  • HP TouchPad 16GB for $399
  • HP TouchPad 32GB for $499
  • HP TouchPad 64GB for $599

What do you think, would you pay nearly $600 for a tablet that’s about to be discontinued, knowing that support for the product is likely to be minimal?

My guess is that you may not have to. I suspect we’ll see all three models discounted deeply in the coming months as HP and third party retailers try to clear out stock.

The webOS operating system may not be entirely dead — HP is hoping to license the software to other companies for use in phones, tablets, or other products. But so far no licensing deals have been announced, which puts the fate of the operating system in doubt, and that probably doesn’t bode well for future software updates for the TouchPad or for cool new third party apps from independent developers.

Like other TouchPad models, the new 64GB HP TouchPad features a 9.7 inch, 1024 x 768 pixel display, webOS 3.0 operating system, and a front-facing 1.3MP camera. It has a 6300mAh battery, measures 7.5″ x 9.5″ x 0.5″ and weighs about 1.6 pounds.

  1. When they start to sell for half price, and assuming someone figures out how to root them to run andoid…  then hell yeah.

    1. Half price will still be too much!  They should blow them out for $99, $129 and $149 for each of those three models.  They could get rid of their stock at those prices.  I wouldn’t buy one, but somebody will.

        1. I agree, if the 64 gb sold for 149 (or even 175), I would buy one. I do find it odd that they are taking orders for the 64 gb tablet if they are discontinuing the WebOS hardware.
