Update: Samsung NC215S solar netbook delayed until August

Samsung NC215s

The Samsung NC215S is the first 10 inch netbook to feature a solar panel built into the lid. It was initially scheduled to ship during the week of July 3rd, but as you may have noticed that week came and went. While the mini-laptop did go up for pre-order on Amazon recently, it’s not actually shipping yet.

I reached out to Samsung and found out that there’s been a delay involving the custom solar panels. The release date has been pushed back by a month or so and now Samsung plans to ship the NC215S in mid or late August.

The netbook features a 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N570 dual core processor and a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel matte display. The solar panel is expected to generate enough electricity to provide 1 hour of run time for every 2 hours of charge time.

You dont need the sun to recharge your laptop.

Just like you dont need the sun to operate your solar powered calculator.

Cool thing about this is that, its charging even while you are using it.

So… Can it run flash without an Nvidia chip?

  • http://www.liliputing.com Brad Linder

Sure. Just don’t expect to handle 1080p HD flash video all that well. Or Hulu. But I’ve viewed 720p Flash content on similar devices with decent results.

What type of Intel video processor does this machine have?

  • http://www.liliputing.com Brad Linder

Intel’s Atom N570 chip features GMA 3150 graphics — which doesn’t support hardware Flash acceleration. But it’s fast enough to handle most 720p content and not much more than that.

    Very

Very dubious about the power claims. The maximum surface available for PVCs is ~2sq.dm, indicating a power generation in bright sunlight of ~1W.
Minimum power consumption is likely to be ~5W even for a very basic netbook of this class.
