Samsung introduced a new line of laptops at an event in New York a few weeks ago. The Samsung Series 3 laptops will have screen sizes ranging from 11.6 inches to 15.6 inches. The smaller models are thin and light, but lack optical disc drives or removable batteries. Samsung hasn’t announced an official release date, but J&R is taking pre-orders for the 12 inch model for $749.99.
The product page describes a notebook quite similar to the one I saw in New York. It has a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5-2410M processor, 4GB of DDR3 memory, a 500GB hard drive, and Intel HD graphics. The laptop has a 1366 x 768 pixel display, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, and Gigabit Ethernet.
There are only 2 USB 2.0 ports, but the Series 3 notebook also has mic, headphone, VGA, HDMI, and Ethernet ports. It weighs 3.1 pounds and measures 11.8″ x 7.7″ x 1.2″ with a 6 cell battery.
Update: This model actually has a 12.5 inch display, not a 12.1 inch screen.

very similar to asus Ul series and acer 1830t series. Nothing really exciting here again from Samsung… just looking to fit a product into a category already existing rather than improving than giving us something a little different or innovative.Â
besides the TimelineX 1830T.. what are the other options for an 11.6″ Sandy Bridge notebook that’s 3lbs at this price range? this Samsung has a nice clean design, slim matte bezel (none of that glossy fingerprint magnet sheen that most notebooks nowadays have), and i just like the layout and overall looks of this. if anything, i wish there were more options for 11.6″ notebooks right now.
Edit: just saw that the TimelineX 11.6″ still has a 1st gen Core i, so i won’t count that now.
I would also like to see Samsung innovating a bit, but overall this seems like a really nice 12.1-inch notebook and pricing is good too, so it will definitely go on my really short laptop options list.
what are your other options?
