Virtually every PC, phone, and consumer electronics device maker has either released or announced a tablet in the last year. But you know who’s already sold an awful lot of tablets? Apple. The company launched the iPad 14 months ago, and the iPad 2 just a few months ago. And in that time, the company has sold 25 million units.

We haven’t seen concrete stats from Samsung, Motorola, Asus, or any of the other big name Android tablet makers yet, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it turns out the iPad and iPad 2 have outsold all the Android tablets combined.

That could change as Google continues to improve the tablet version of Android and as companies work to produce (and market) their competing tablets.

  1. Aside from being anti Apple, is there any good reason for buying a different tablet? I think it’s pretty safe to say that as is, there aren’t any tablets that do anything better than iPad. Price is about the only reason that most consumers would buy something other than an iPad or as mentioned, their dislike of Apple. It’s not like you can go wow, look at how much better, lighter, faster, and all the apps that these Android tablets have. I find this scramble rather fascinating. The numbers support the statement that the iPad is the tablet market. If Apple continues to blow out their previous gen iPads, then the money savings for going Android is even less compelling. Nobody wants to pay $499 for a tablet that doesn’t say Apple. Proof? Look at the stock levels of the Asus Transformer. I see this whole situation like the summer movie releases. Often the most hyped is often the crappiest movie out there. Sure there is hype and reviews, but the satisfaction is just not there as you leave the theater.

    1. There are a lot of reasons.  Android has a more open system.  You can choose to use different app stores or none.  You aren’t locked into the iTunes ecosystem.  Android tablets have different forms.  7″ or 10″, usb, sd slot, just more choices depending on what you want.  Arguably Android has and can continue to evolve faster than iOS and there are more releases during the year as opposed to 1 iPad revision per year.  That means a more powerful Android tablet will probably come out before a more powerful iPad.  Android allows for more customization.  It’s closer to a full computer than the iPad is.  Android has true multitasking.  Live wallpapers are pretty nice.  Widgets are nice too.

I think the iPad is great and apparently so do millions of others, but I’m planning to get an Android tablet because it suits me better not because I don’t like Apple.

    2. Got the 16 GB acer iconia A500 for about $450. USB full size host port, mini device port, 32 GB (for $50) in sd card slot + of course HDMI. The 5mp and 2mp cameras are great. I have a 32GB mini usb nub stick ($50) in the host port most of time.  Apple would charge $100 for such extra ports off an adapter on the dock port, if external storage is even possible (is it?).So for $550, I have 80GB tablet, 64 of it removable. I figure the equivalent iPad2 wifi only would be nearing $900 with the equivalent value of the ports I have on the Acer.
I can browse the device from my PC and copy stuff directly to it.Am I looking at this as a keyboard-less laptop? Yes. I have a bluetooth keyboard with it too though. But I don’t want to edit office docs with it. Gmail app is great for the tablet.I am proud not to have the Apple logo on it, which means S.J. will not be able to milk me every step of the way. And eventually when the bootloader is unlocked, I will be able to dual boot ubuntu unity edition, which is designed for multitouch, for doing real work if needed.I think there will be a similar performing 10 in tablet for $279 by xmas at which point honeycomb will take off big time. Every kid in town has ipod touch and thinks the tablets are cool but still too expensive for most.

  2. I believe that B&N alone sold more Android tablets than Sammy, Moto and Asus combined 🙂

  3. Wow! That is pretty impressive, even with the dozens of Android tablets they’re still able to outsell them all combined by at least 5 to 1.

    1. There’s more like 110 tablets released from about 64 vendors.  The comparison here is only to the big name brands.

But it should be remembered that Apple has a head start and the posted figure is for the last 14 months.  While many of the tablets sold by the other big name companies haven’t been around that long yet.

No direct comparisons have been made to whether the others have been truly outsold with all of them combined, it’s hard to tell without official numbers as most releases are just estimates that may or may not be accurate.  Like returns are not usually factored.

Though given the general higher pricing and starting from a weaker market standpoint with having to enter the tablet market that it’s likely Apple has succeeded in outselling the others big name brands at least.
