The Qualcomm Snapdragon MSMS8660 chip isn’t ready for prime time yet, but the folks at Anandtech managed to get their hands on a sample phone with the chip inside for testing purposes. The chip is a dual core system-on-a-chip with a 1.5 GHz clock speed and an Adreno 220 GPU as well as a cellular modem. Eventually the chips will be available in 1.2 GHz versions as well.
While the test rig was a smartphone, the same chips will likely end up powering tablets and other mobile devices.
So how did the new chip fare in AnandTech’s tests? Quite simply, it blew away the competition in pretty much every graphics test, besting even the popular NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core processor.
Of course, we’re talking about a next-gen chip here, and it’s not like Texas Instruments, Samsung, NVIDIA, and other chip makers are sitting on their hands at the moment. Neither is Qualcomm. The company eventually plans to bring 2.5 GHz quad-core chips to market. But it looks like once phones and tablets with the MSM8660 chip start hitting the streets, they could offer performance that’s significantly better than anything on the market today.
On the other hand, these benchmarks might be a little unrealistic since they were recorded on a test unit with no power management features in place.

Ndivia promises quad cores by August. I might lose my grip and get top of the line tablet then. Come on Sammy, I will give you enough time to put SAMOLED plus in it.
Sure you can push the clock speed up on any of these ARM chips. . . and suck the life right out of the battery asap. More cores means longer battery life because you can run each core at a lower frequency and use less voltage to get the same amount of work done.
Impressive benchmarks don’t mean a thing when your phone’s battery is dead.
