The Dell Streak 7 may be hampered by a sub-par 800 x 480 pixel display and Google Android 2.2 operating system, but the other hardware is pretty much what you’d get from any of the Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablets starting to hit the streets. So it should come as no surprise that in capable hands, the Dell Streak can be transformed into a much more powerful machine.

They don’t come much more capable than Android hacker DJ_Steve, and he’s released one of the first custom ROMS for the Dell Streak 7. It’s based on Dell’s build of Google Android 2.2.2, but it includes a custom kernel that lets you overclock the tablet to run at 1.4 GHz 1.6 GHz. The kernel is based on the code used to overclock the ViewSonic gTablet.

The custom software also includes an Android 2.3 gingerbread theme and drivers that should improve battery life.
