The Asus Eee Pad Transformer has been in short supply overseas since launching in Taiwan and the UK, so it’s not surprising that stores are having a hard time keeping it in stock in the US. What is a bit surprising is just how hard it is to get your hands on the Android tablet with an optional keyboard in the US at the moment.

The tablet just went on sale in the States, and it’s already out of stock at most retailers. Buy.com, Amazon, B&H, TigerDirect, DataVision, Newegg, and Best Buy all show the tablet as either out of stock or available for pre-order.

Some of the retailers listed at the Asus web site don’t make any mention of the tablet at all.

There are at least two possible explanations here. There may be huge demand for the Transformer, with its relatively low price and strong feature set. Or Asus might just not have very many of the tablets to sell at this point. My guess is that it’s a bit of both… but I suspect the latter explanation has more to do with the current short supply than the first.

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer has a 10.1 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display, a 1 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB to 32GB of storage, and an optional detachable keyboard with its own extended battery. The tablet starts at $399.99, with the keyboard running an extra $149.99.

If you’re interested in over-paying, Amazon does show several resellers with new or used models in stock for $579 and up.
