The Barnes & Noble NOOKcolor is turning out to be an Android tablet hacker’s dream. While the $250 tablet is sold as a color eBook reader, it turns out you can root the Android operating system, install third party apps, update the Android OS, and even install Ubuntu Linux. Now it looks like you can also overclock the NOOKcolor to run at 950 MHz or faster.

Out of the box, this Android tablet runs at 800 MHz. But it turns out that by installing a custom kernel, you can actually reduce the voltage and increase the clock speed, which should result in a faster machine that uses less power, which means you should get better battery life.

Theoretically you should also be able to overclock the NOOKcolor to run at 1 GHz, but users have reported difficulty getting things to work properly at that speed. It can also run at 900 MHz if you’re slightly less ambitious.

Of course you’ll need to root your NOOKcolor before you get started. If all you’re looking for is an eBook Reader, there’s probably nothing to see here and you should just move along. But if you’re willing to play with tweaked kernels, you can find download details and instructions at the xda-developers forum.
