Tired of all those Android tablets with 16:9 aspect ratio displays? Well, Velocity Micro has one for you. It’s called the Cruz T103, and it started shipping last month. But the folks at Laptoping noticed that Velocity Micro is also shipping  anew model called the Cruz T301 tablet which has a 4:3 display.

Both the T103 and the T301 run about $250, and both have 7 inch diagonal displays. But while the T103 has an 800 x 480 pixel screen which is good for watching widescreen movies, the Cruz T301 has an 800 x 600 pixel display which may be better for reading web pages and eBooks.

The Velocity Micro Cruz Tablet T301 has 256MB of RAM and 4GB of storage. It also comes with a 4GB SD card. The tablet has 802.11n WiFi and a battery that the company says is good for more than ten hours of run time. The tablet has a capacitive touchscreen display and runs Google Android 2.0.

Interestingly, the T103 tablet has twice the RAM, at 512MB and Velocity Micro says the T103 also has support for additional audio and video codecs. While the T301 supports MPEG-4 and H.264, the T103 also supports H.263, MOV, and AVI videos. It looks like the company is really pushing the T103 as a media tablet, and the T301 as more of a web tablet/eBook reader.

Neither tablet comes with the Android Market preloaded, but you can download and install some third party apps using the Cruz Market.

You can purchase the Velocity Micro T301 tablet from Amazon for $249.99.

  1. purchased this machine no bad if you wipe it and install your own ROM …..Velocity Cruz is COMPLETELY LOCKED if you don’t you can only install from a list of 20 apps will NOT install marketplace they have there own crappy market Don’t even think about playing media on this thing out of the box……Buy it, Wipe it, Put your own whatever make it yours! then and ONLY then will it be more than a paper weight.

  2. But it does not read PDF files and ePub files even though all the info on it says it does. I have been trying for over a month to get this to work and it simply does not. When I call tech sup[port they say they can’t help me with this issue because it involves 3rd party software. When I make a ticket and send it to Tech Support, they keep on telling me programs I should use but NOT ONE of them works. Their advertising is VERY MISLEADING! – Fr. Martel

  3. for browsing nook color has bad flash interfacing or something. My nook won’t display pages properly that have a lot of flash graphics. I usually just read on it anyways so it’s not a big deal for me but for those that have to continously be online it might be better…Idk until i try one though.

  4. Agreed with the previous sentiments. With the 2.2 update in Jan, the Nook Color beats out these tablets on specs and price. You get a whole lot more bang for your buck.

Plus, I can play with the NC in stores, hands on. Don’t know if you can do the same with these ones.

  5. Reading of letter-size, multi-column, graphic-heavy PDF files at fullscreen. While surprisingly readable on a Nook Color, I still think it’s hard to beat the 4:3 screen format for these kinds of documents. It’s also a pretty good format for viewing web pages in portrait mode and still being able to use the keyboard.

At least, it would be if it wasn’t for the enormous bezels. You could fit a 9.7″ iPad-size screen on this body and still have room left over.

  6. 103? 301? Argh!
The specs for the 301 seem pretty similar to the Pandigital Novel. I guess Velocity Micro and Pandigital both work with the same OEM, because the firmware for the original Cruz can be used in the Novel.
The big differences of course are the ‘n’ WiFi and capacitive touchscreen.
This might be interesting, but why would anyone prefer this to a Nook Color?
