Texas Instruments has just unveiled its latest mobile chip, and the new OMAP4440 kind of makes NVIDIA’s blazing fast 1GHz dual core Tegra 2 chip seem like last year’s news.

The TI OMAP4440 has twin 1.5GHz ARM Cortex-A9 cores… but it also has two ARM Cortex-M3 low power chips to handle less resource-intensive tasks, while reducing power consumption and improving battery life. The company says it offers 30 percent faster web page loading times, twice the 1080p HD video performance, and a 1.25x increase in graphics performance over the 1GHz OMAP4430 chip.

The chipset supports 3D graphics and HD video playback with support for 1080p video at 60 frames per second as well as 3D stereoscopic HD video.

Texas Instruments says the chip can handle HD video conferencing, and can even shoot video from two separate 12MP cameras at the same time.

The TI OMAP4440 can be used for smartphones, tablets, and other devices where multimedia is a priority.

One reply on “Texas Instruments introduces multicore 1.5GHz ARM-based CPU”

  1. Its nice to see texas instruments playing hard ball. It is blatantly apparent ARM is an unstoppable force which is destined to take on x86. It is absolutely amassing TI has a dual core 1.5ghz arm cpu today considering that tegra2 chip hasnt even really hit the market. your talking 1ghz dual core to 1.5 ghz in a few months. There are endless ARM cpu manufacturers with endless resources and scientist working in a lot of directions. Such huge numbers of manufactures competing yet ironically they are a solid combined force which is ARMs power. And a power that has no choice but to grow into the most sophisticated CPUs the world has ever seen. ARM is gonna change everything PC. Its exciting and it truly is as if the flood gates have opened. ARM is unstoppable and its coming for x86, faster and faster.
