It looks like the Augen GenTouch78 Android tablet was just the first inexpensive Android tablet offered by KMart. Today we learned it’s not the last, because the retailer is now selling the Sylvania 7″ MID Tablet Wireless Mobile Internet Device.

Aside from a catchy name, here’s what the tablet has to offer:

  • Google Android 2.1
  • 7 inch, 800 x 480 pixel display
  • 802.11b/g WiFi
  • 2GB of storage
  • 512MB of RAM
  • 2 mini USB slots
  • HDMI output
  • microSD card slot
  • $179.99 price tag

There’s no word on what kind of touchscreen the computer has, whether it comes with the Android Market or not, or if it has a G-sensor for automatic screen rotation. I wouldn’t place bets on any of those features, but the specs don’t appear to tell the whole story — the photo shows what appears to be a camera on the front of the tablet, but the product description doesn’t mention a camera. It’s also not clear where the Android buttons (home, back, menu, and/or search) are hiding.

KMart is also continuing to offer the Augen GenTouch78 as well as several other Android tablets from ViewSonic, Velocity Cruz, and others.

  1. I’ve own 8 android tablets and this one above. I Product test them now but even this one not as good as I had hoped. DOA on both USB ports, iffy touch screen when you press icon could shift downwards so you can’t press the right icon app you want. touch screen uses OSD software base soft touch for home, capture, menu, back and volume those can be iffy to press or hard to. Not even the factory reset can rest everything back to the factory spec on the first time. You have to do the factory press reset on the back then do the factory again to clear out all the data. Once you do that then the device is crappy as not like when you open out of box. I say you get what you pay for all these Androids OS tables should not be sold in USA. What happen to QC nothing. Crap you crap you stuck with. Poor battery life and memory is not allocated correctly in these devices. Over heating also.

This one is suppose to be 1GHz but on the OEM from China it reads 800MHz to 1GHz but really it’s more 800MHz than a GHz. RAM is only 256MB, but after you run it down to 93MB. These devices need to come with 1GB of RAM enough with these 256MB models just not going to be enough to playback HD as this one is. The video quality is also washed out at times. If you look really close you can see hue and saturation issues.

  2. All these crappy mostly Arm11 tablets are killing me.

Why are american companies so cheap?
    And yes I am american.

All these crap tablets are a waste of time because they waste time because there so slow with Arm11 cpu’s.

And Archos is no better being 2 months late on there own release.

People first impression of android with these crappy tablets makes android look really bad.

If it wasn’t for the apple control I would say screw android, BUT its the hardware building producing cheap crap for a quick buck.

All the maker of these crap tablets.

    YOU SUCK.
