Asus Eee PC 1215T unboxed… by Asus

Someone at Asus has apparently gotten tired of waiting for bloggers and users to unbox their products, because Asus has just posted its own official unboxing video of the upcoming Eee PC 1215T laptop.

The Eee PC 1215T is the first 12.1 inch Eee PC model with an AMD chip. It has a 1.7GHz AMD Athlon Neo K125 single core CPU. The guy in the video mistakenly says it’ll be somewhere between an Intel Atom N450 and N550 chip in terms of performance, but in my tests the AMD K125 chip blows away all Atom chips — even the dual core N550.

The laptop comes in silver, red or black. It has a matte case and a glossy display. It has a full sized chiclet-style keyboard, and Asus says the palm rest is larger than on earlier 12.1 inch Eee PC models.

The Eee PC 1215T has an HDMI port and can support 1080p HD video playback and 7.1 channel audio. It has ATI Radeon HD 4250 graphics.

Just to set the record straight it’s 4225 graphics not 4250 the difference is clock speed on the nile platform which this is the clock is lower to keep power consumption under control. Still a way better solution than weak atom and graphics or messing around with Broadcom accelerator chip: is there or not, does it work.. etc

I would buy one of these tomorrow if they made a version with a K625 CPU. My girlfriend has one of the Acer AS1551′s with the K625, and it’s a GREAT little machine. My only complaint with it is how small the trackpad is.

If Asus wants to send me a free netbook, I will be happy to make a unboxing and bragging video with there new toys. I already own one older model and I like the ati graphics, but it seems like there are too many ‘new” netbooks for me.

brad, how long do you think this battery lasts in this AMD K125 machine? Roughly how many hours?

I am planning to buy the 1215P with dual core N550 with no ION.
How long do you think the battery can last?

You have given us 10 inch N550 estimates but not 12 inch N550 battery estimates

what do you mean the K125 blows the N550?

Reference is for performance, especially at single core processes the K125 does better than even the N550.

ATOM does have the battery run time advantage but it’s debatable whether it’s enough to compensate for the performance difference unless battery run time is your priority.

Echoing above question! I want to know about the battery life Having gotten fairly (if grudgingly) “used” to a 10.1″ netbook screen for many purposes, a 12″ one seems like looxury, of the kind that kids today don’t know how to appreciate. Why, in my day! Both ways. Snow — and sharks!

A random reseller site I just googled says “up to 6 Hours of Battery Life,” which is … well, it’s better than any of my current laptops, but it’s slightly less impressive now that some netbooks are advertising 8 or even more hours of life. (Perhaps none with 12″ screens, though!)

Questions:

1) Does anyone have comments about using the ExpressGate /Splashtop built-in OS? A hard drive’s nice and all, but with a browser and skype, most of my computing needs are actually met (If it only it had a corporate-friendly jabber client … there are some httpjabber gateways, but I haven’t seen one that’d work for me.)

2) Can anyone speak to the suitability of this processor / graphics chip to running Ubuntu? The Eee series in general has been excellent this way, and I hope this one follows the same tradition. Splashtop is Linux, so I’d imagine there are no real compatibility issues …

I was wondering about this myself, but the guy in the video says 4250 and so do the official product specs on the Asus web site. It could be a typo, but until I get a test unit myself, I’m just repeating the official specs.

I can’t find any reviews anywhere that mention whether or not the 1215t has the same faulty ac adapter pin as the 1215 (my heart about broke when I read a scary number of reviews saying the thing snapped off within a couple of weeks). Does anybody know anything about it?

The 1215T has ATI Radeon HD 4250. NOT 4225.

Can anyone comment on the 1215T vs 1215N in the following regard:

-2.8GB Max RAM. Intel limited the D525 so the 1215N can only use 2.8GB. This renders RAM upgrades pretty much useless, as well as 64bit processing.

-Single Channel or Dual Channel memory? 1215N is single channel

-Intel refused to share DMI, so the 1215N’s video card runs over the PCI-E lane…that is ridiculous. Is the 1215T superior with the AMD graphics?

I’m hoping AMD didn’t make the same mistakes Intel did because this laptop is really a game changer.

i actually own a 1215t and battery life runs from 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours depending on usage. Was able to finish 2 movies with wifi off and brightness at 50%. i couldn’t care less about express gate. it’s not as fast as i thought it would be. no instant on here and if i’m going to wait i might as well wait for the proper OS to load up. able to do simple photoshop stuff, all office apps run smoothly. haven’t tried games.

The 12″ screen is awesome for a netbook, it’s the biggest netbook ever, in fact! I’ve heard rumors of a 14″, and even a 17″ screen netbook on the horizon, so you may want to wait for those. Maybe some day you’ll be working on a 21″ screen netbook and tell your grandchildren about the “olden days” when you had to struggle with a 10.1″ screen netbook!
